The Pursuit of Happyness is a 2006 American biographical drama film directed by Gabriele Muccino and starring Will Smith. This film is based on the life of Chris Gardner, a motivational speaker who rose from homelessness to become a highly successful investment banker before losing his job and business during the early 1990s recession.The story centers around Gardner's struggle with depression, drug addiction, and poverty following the collapse of his company. In 1982, Gardner was living in an efficiency apartment in Berkeley, California, where he had been a tenant for three years. He was an executive at a brokerage firm when the market crashed in 1987. He then spent several months driving a bus and eventually settled into trading used cars at a San Francisco dealership. Gardner's life began to take a positive turn after he met and married his second wife, Robin. Later, he launched his own stock brokerage firm from his apartment.In 1990, the Gards moved to Chicago briefly as Gardner pursued his dream of becoming rich "in one year". In 1991 the family moved to the affluent suburb of Evanston, Illinois to further pursue "the American Dream" as Gardner called it. During the early 1990s recession, Gardner lost both his stock and real estate trading companies and his wife left him. He soon got a job as an assistant real estate broker at a firm where he was required to sell houses for commission. On January 4, 1992, Gardner found out that he had been fired from the job after not doing enough to promote his own company. Gardner then ended up getting two other jobs which did not pay well enough for him to pay the rent on his apartment; he lived in a small motel room with several friends because of this situation. Later that month, Gardner got another job with another brokerage firm but lost it again, giving up his car and all of his belongings to live in a homeless shelter. The next year, his grandmother died and left him $40,000. He used the money to start a new company called Gardner Rich & Co. This company focused on helping clients invest in stocks which would increase their money in the long run. He put part of the money into his own company and lost it all when he tried to verify if some customers were really who they said they were by flying to some foreign countries to do research, but some of the customers were not really who they said they were. With this setback, he also lost some of the initial investment money too.The film ends with Will Smith talking about how he met Chris Gardner on an airplane flight.
